Granddaughter sticks up for her boyfriend when her traditional grandma relentlessly grills his career choices at the family dinner: 'The family always excuses her behavior by saying she is from a different time'

Granny couldn't fathom a career that didn't involve starched suits, a mind-numbing commute, or a leather briefcase in hand. 

Obviously, this woman's freelance graphic designer boyfriend didn't fit that bill, and despite him earning more money than anyone at that table combined, Grandma wouldn't back off, ranting about how his talents were being wasted on a 'fake' career. Tired of respect for respect's sake, the granddaughter stuck up for her boyfriend against the matriarch, calling out her impolite behavior in front of the whole family.

  • Although I agree conceptually with the idea of respecting your elders, I think it's a little dated to respect old people simply because they're old. Age doesn't grant immunity to basic decency, and while I always try my best to give elders the benefit of the doubt, there is a line that can be crossed that negates that effort. 

    Like when grandparents are mean or cruel for no reason, or when old people blab about archaic ideals without an effort to understand modernity, something in me snaps, and I suddenly feel all sense of mindless respect wafting away like smoke. I imagine that this is what happened when this young woman (and her family) were sitting down for dinner, listening to grandma absolutely grill the new guy at the table. 

    I'm not sure it was ever appropriate to publicly berate someone's income, so Granny doesn't even really have an excuse here.

She couldn't resist raking the boyfriend's graphic design career over the coals, demeaning his profession, and essentially calling him a mooch in front of everyone. 

    That wouldn't stand all night; someone had to call her out.

  • We all reach a breaking point with family members, where pleasantries and human decency collide. Oftentimes, when there is an enormous age gap combined with the inability to attempt to understand one another, many things get lost in translation. I suppose this was a good lesson for everyone at the table that day, that elders aren't exempt from normal decency and that communication is a two-way street. 

    This is certainly not the first or last awkward family dinner, but it's one that will likely be remembered for all time because it was the day that a young woman finally stood up to the Grandma who was always mean to everyone. And that's a victory.
